چکیده
E oundss . For exact. comparisons, however, a more definite term mus t e used. In this bulletin, therefore, the term specific gravity is used . Specific gravity as used here is based on the weight of the oven-dry wood and the volume when green . The average specific gravity and the range in specific gravity fo r the wood of a species are, in the absence of actual test data, criteri a of the character of the wood, and may be used to estimate the strength properties ; wearing qualities ; shrinkage characteristics ; and woodworking, painting, gluing, and nail-holding properties ; as well as the shipping weights ; +t1P.l value : heat conductivity ; and pulp yields . Specific-grvity vaiues may be ,„nverted into any other for m for practical use, provided the moisture-shrinkage relation is known.

Estimating Regional Softwood Lumber Supply in the United States Using Seemingly Unrelated Regression
In this article, we present estimates of regional softwood lumber supply functions in the United States using annual time series data for 1959 to 2009. Seemingly unrelated regression is used in a profit maximization framework to model softwood lumber supply as a function of lumber and stumpage prices, lagged supply, wage rate, and interest rate for the eastern and western United States. The eff...
متن کاملU.S.-Canada softwood lumber trade disputes and lumber price volatility
In the last 20 years, U.S.-Canada trade in forest products has received a great deal of attention on both sides of the border, as well as in international organizations such as the World Trade Organization. A dispute regarding softwood lumber imported from Canada to the United States, a $7 billion business in 1999, has been the most controversial. People involved in the dispute have described i...

This paper discusses how present scanning technologies are being applied to automatic lumber grading. The presentation focuses on 1) what sensing and scanning devices are needed to measure information for accurate grading feature detection, 2) the hardware and software needed to efficiently process this information, and 3) specific issues related to softwood lumber grading and hardwood lumber g...
متن کاملIncidence of the 1996 U.S.–Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement among Landowners, Loggers, and Lumber Manufacturers in the U.S. South
A framework was developed to estimate the welfare incidence of the 1996 U.S.–Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement among producers in two-processing-stage markets—timberland owners, loggers, and lumber manufacturers—in the U.S. South. Timberland owners are the largest beneficiary whereas lumber manufacturers are the second and loggers the least. Empirically, without considering substitution effects ...
متن کاملFederal timber restrictions, interregional spillovers, and the impact on US softwood markets
An econometric model of the US softwood lumber and timber markets is estimated and used to simulate the price, trade, and welfare effects of reductions in federal timber sales in the western US commencing in the late 1980s. Results indicate that the timber sale reductions increased lumber prices by roughly 15 percent in the mid-1990s. Lumber consumers were the unambiguous losers from the policy...
